Pothole repair

Pothole repair refers to the repair of potholes caused by cracks and water infiltration in the asphalt. This damage often occurs when water penetrates the asphalt, freezes during frost and expands, causing the asphalt to crack. The following products are suitable for pothole repair.

Makabit®

We offer two Makabit products. The first is Makabit82 Super, which contains solvents, has been in our program since the 1980s, and can be used at temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius. The second is Makabit+ (according to HrepA), which is solvent-free, reacts purely with humidity, and impresses with its high initial strength. Both products are single-component, belong to the cold mix category and are characterized by high stability.

The areas to be repaired must be free of standing water and other contaminants, as otherwise proper adhesion cannot be guaranteed. For optimal results, we recommend priming the substrate with ESTOL C40B5-S or ESTOL Adhesive Primer.

Only for Makabit +: to support or accelerate curing in dry weather conditions, the material can be sprayed with water (approx. 0.5 l per container with 25kg mixture) before compaction.

Further application is the same for both products. Both products must be temporarily tamped down and compacted with a vibrating plate or tamper. The repaired area is then sprinkled with sand and is immediately trafficable. Final compaction is provided by road traffic. Even at high temperatures in the summer months, no deformation is possible after hardening. A new surface layer is created, for example, after raising and adjusting manholes and gutter inlets. This is also done after all excavations in traffic areas. In addition, ramp-ups and repairs are carried out on industrial floors (including concrete) as well as on courtyard and garage areas.

Both products are recyclable and are available in the following grain sizes:

Makabit® 0/3 – installation depth up to a maximum of approx. 15mm

Makabit® 0/5 – installation depth up to a maximum of approx. 50mm

Makabit® 0/8 – installation depth up to a maximum of approx. 60mm

Makabit® 0/11 – installation depth up to a maximum of approx. 80mm

ESTOL® Biomak

ESTOL Biomak is a reactively hardening asphalt mixture with grit sizes 0/2, 0/4, 0/8, and 0/11. The grit sizes 0/8 and 0/11 are particularly suitable for renovating and repairing open-pored asphalt (OPA asphalt). It can be processed cold with high initial stability after approx. 15 minutes. In addition, it hardens quickly with the addition of water, which means that the material also adheres well to damp substrates. ESTOL Biomak is also free of volatile organic solvents (VOC according to H RepA). Thanks to its optimized formula, ESTOL Biomak can be used for all types of road surfaces such as mastic asphalt, mastic asphalt, and concrete. It is ideal for repairing and leveling uneven surfaces and repairing damage to thin-layer coatings. ESTOL Biomak is also ideal for the creation of new surface layers after raising and adjusting manholes and gutters. Deeper damaged areas can be leveled with several layers of ESTOL Biomak, or alternatively, grit or gravel can be used as a base for a layer of Biomak.

ESTOL® Mastic Asphalt

ESTOL Mastic Asphalt is particularly suitable for the rapid repair of major damage to all road surfaces to a depth of approx. 50mm (deeper damage should be filled with several layers of ESTOL mastic asphalt and merged). The granulate is melted with the addition of heat, for example using our mastic asphalt cooker, and filled into the pothole. ESTOL Mastic Asphalt is a non-porous, thermoplastic asphalt with a grain size of 0/4. It is weather-resistant and can therefore be used all year round. It can withstand heavy mechanical loads within 10-20 minutes of installation. This is why ESTOL Mastic Asphalt is also used for the permanent repair of damaged areas on surfaces subject to heavy mechanical stress, such as roundabouts, truck entrances, highways, federal highways, race tracks, airports, industrial halls (forklift traffic), etc. It is also used for filling boreholes, creating new base courses after raising/adjusting manholes, gutter inlets, slide caps and ramp-ups.
